Bio-fuels, are fuels either used directly (ex. Wood or wood products) or produced by the breakdown of organic products to produce gas. They can include agricultural, energy crops, landfill gas(methane), biodegradable waste and forestry by-products. The most common form used in the domestic market is the wood burner, these systems are usually found in rural areas where there is no gas supply. The basic wood burner can be used just as an individual room heater or alternatively a large range (Aga, Rayburn) could be used to run central heating, supply hot water and also for cooking. The fuel used in these burners comes in three basic forms, wood pellets, wood chips and logs. Wood pellets and chips are the most convenient, because they can both be used in automatically fed boilers. Wood pellets are a compacted form of wood, which have a low moisture content and a high energy density. In other European countries the use of wood pellets is expanding and the technology is sophisticated. On a larger scale, biodegradable waste and bio-gas systems are used to supply a large number of homes and businesses via combined heat and power plants. These power plants collect general waste from homes, hospitals and businesses, which is Incinerated, generating steam that is transformed into hot water and this is then pumped through a network of highly insulated pipes to feed local businesses and homes with hot water and central heating. The demand for this type of Energy Efficient way of generating heat and hot water will grow as we struggle to find solutions for the disposing of millions of tons of waste we generate every year.
