The domestic consumption of electricity in the UK is increasing on average at around
1% a year, as households acquire and use a variety of more electrical appliances.
Even though these appliances only account for about 16% of energy use, they actually
account for 32% of CO2 emissions and approx. 50% of our fuel bills.
Therefore, it is very important that we take this into account when considering how we
take action to save Energy and Money.
To help us make decisions on how we do this, as been helped with the introduction of
Energy Saving Labels (sample shown) that you can find attached to appliances like: -
Washing Machines, Tumble Dryers, Dishwashers, Fridge Freezers and Cookers.
Products that display the Energy Efficiency Recommended logo, meet or exceed
the Governments guidelines and will help you save energy, money and contribute to
protecting of the environment.

In addition to buying energy efficient products, we can also help to cut down on energy
consumption by just being efficient in how we use our appliances. Below are some
useful, simple tips on how to save more energy and extra money: -

  • Fit long life, low energy light bulbs throughout the property.
  • Use appliances during Economy 7 or cheaper tariffs.
  • Turn off lights when not needed.
  • Only boil enough water in kettles as required.
  • Avoid using washing machines without a FULL LOAD.
  • or use Half Load/Quick wash cycle.
  • Use a washing machine with or at it’s highest spin speed.
  • Use lowest temperature washing settings.
  • Dry clothes outside instead of using tumble dryer..
  • Avoid having fridge/freezers next to cookers or in high heat areas.
  • Try and keep fridge/freezers at least two thirds full.
  • Avoid leaving appliances in standby mode.
  • Gas ovens can be 70% cheaper to run than electric ovens.
  • Electric Induction hobs are 50% cheaper to run than solid disc heaters.
  • Turning room heating thermostats down 1° can save you 10% on running costs
