There are numerous types of heating systems that can be found throughout the UK and
even though the majority of modern central heating systems are efficient and cheap to run,
there are still many old, inadequate and expensive systems being used.
Therefore, when you are installing or updating a heating system, it is quite important to
consider all the alternative, energy efficient options available. This includes renewable
energy types of heating, for which there are Government grants available.

The most common types of existing heating systems found in the UK are: -

(1) Gas Central Heating (Natural and LPG)
(2) Electric Storage Heaters
(3) Individual Room Heaters
(4) Oil Central Heating
(5) Solid Fuel Central Heating (Coal and Wood)
(6) Electric Central Heating
(7) Communal Heating Systems

Other types of Renewable Energy systems

(1) Solar energy
(2) Wind Power
(3) Ground Source Heat Pumps
(4) Bio-fuels
(5) Hydroelectricity

The vast majority (68 - 78%) of homes in the UK have some form of natural gas central
heating, but with many of these having old inefficient boilers and with new technology
available, there is considerable scope for heating improvements to be made to help reduce
CO2 emissions and also help us all save money.
Anyone considering replacing a boiler or heating system will be required to comply with the
current building regulations to meet the new energy efficiency requirements. Hopefully, this
will help to improve the general overall efficiency of heating systems in the future and
reduce our energy consumption.
Below are some useful, additional tips on how you can reduce your heating systems running
costs: -

  • Turning room thermostats down by 1° can save 10% on running costs.
  • Fit thermostatic valves to the radiators.
  • Fit heat reflective foil behind all room radiators.
  • Fit shelves above radiators to deflect heat to centre of room and away from windows.
  • Insulate exposed pipes with pipe lagging.
  • Avoid air locks and bleed radiators.
  • Have the heating system regularly maintained and serviced.
  • Upgrade old gas boilers to Combi/Condensing type.
  • Regularly check and switch to cheapest energy supplier.
